Binance hit for ~$6.3 billion — largest crypto theft on record, ~$3 billion frozen
Thursday evening, an attacker drained Binance hot wallets across ten blockchains in about 20 minutes. Binance's own estimate is ~$6.3B impact; Chainalysis puts the theft at ~$5.9B and TRM Labs at $6.36B — different counts, same event. About $3B was frozen, including $2.3B in USDT/USDC. Binance says its initial investigation points to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, that it will cover all losses from company funds, and that user funds are safe. TRM attributes it to TraderTraitor, North Korea's elite unit — an investigator attribution, not an adjudicated fact. Sources: CoinDesk · CNN · TRM Labs.
