DOJ charges Comey a third time — this one over a 2016 leak
New filings unsealed Monday evening charge former FBI Director James Comey with disclosing national-defense information and conspiracy to disclose it, tied to an Oct. 5, 2016 NYT story on U.S. email surveillance. Prosecutors say he directed staff to talk to a Times reporter. His lawyers say two U.S. attorneys already investigated this exact incident and declined to charge; the case was pursued under seal for ~3 weeks, reportedly filed right at the 10-year statute deadline. Comey denies it: "appalling abuse of the Department of Justice." Same day, a judge ruled DOJ's firing of his daughter Maurene Comey was unlawful and ordered reinstatement/back pay — DOJ says it will appeal. Sources: USA Today · NPR.
