France: 550,000 in the streets, buildings torched, 1,200 detained overnight
Saturday's largely peaceful nationwide protests in France turned violent after dark. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez put turnout at about 550,000 nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris; the CGT union put it at 800,000 — treat both as claims, not counts. Limoges' historic town hall was set ablaze and its roof collapsed, Marseille city hall was broken into and defaced, and Lyon's tourist office was torched, Reuters via CNN reported. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said 1,200 people had been detained nationwide — up from an earlier ~400-by-nightfall tally in right-fed coverage — and condemned 'unacceptable levels of violence.' Macron vowed prosecutions for looting and attacks on town halls. The movement grew out of last month's student rallies over crumbling schools, teacher shortages and living costs. Police conduct is also under scrutiny: a protester in Saint-Etienne lost a hand Saturday, the second such injury in this wave. Sources: CNN · Daily Caller · DW.
